Sash window prices vary widely and to you as a retail purchaser, very confusing. We will try to explain a few things for you, so that you can start to understand why problems arise, how people get conned or how they can find trustworthy local installers who charge a fair price for their work.
It is very easy to say, you’ll get what you pay for but how do you know?
We all get suckered into sometimes thinking we’ve found a bargain, we think we are buying “the same thing” only much cheaper. Once we start using the item purchased, we then find out that it doesn’t do the job quite as well as we thought. Sure there are remedies, complaints procedures to get compensation or your money back but many of us are simply too shamed to admit that we made a poor decision or simply decide to buy the more expensive one we liked in the first place!
Although frustrating, this may be okay with a low cost item like a kitchen appliance, but please don’t make the same mistake with your windows. Take some time to understand what goes into the product you are thinking about, then check the credentials of the company concerned, then ask for references or user reviews. Then and only then, think about ordering, NEVER be rushed or feel forced into making a decision, a bad choice of window WILL lower the value of your home!
If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is!
So how can you tell the difference between a fairly priced but an excellent product, well fitted with meaningful guarantees against one that is lower priced, and looks like it may be for the same thing?
How can you make a sound decision, one you won’t regret later?
Well, it’s our job to educate you about your choices, we must inform you what can be done, whats possible, what’s not etc so that you can decide if you need them on your windows, or not.
Companies generally make great products but what’s the point of paying for extras you’ll never need, notice or use, that’s just a waste of money. However, finding out after you’ve had windows installed, that you could have had a something better, something that works perfectly or looks nicer, is heartbreaking, “if only I’d known”.
Some companies sell plastic sash windows for less than £200 + VAT, any size of window one price, others cost over £1,000 each. Now you’d like to think you would spot the differences right, well yes there are many differences but some of the most important ones aren’t visible.
Suppose one of these companies has been bust several times before, you’d probably question “why” and if the guarantees (which only extend to the installer not you) are worth anything. You may find they don’t actually hold a certificate they have on their website, they simply borrowed the badge. They may outsource deliveries, we’ve seen windows arrive with fruit and vegetables!
Suppose the other, more expensive company has traded for more than 25 years, they specialise in making sash windows (nothing else), they extend their guarantees to homeowners via their network of vetted installers, they hold quality accreditation’s (like SBD the security standard of the Police), each certified and visible for all to see with nationwide deliveries on their own fleet of vehicles.
With this new information, you’ll immediately start thinking that the £200 may not be such a bargain, you may feel more protected with the higher priced product, the difference in price may be worth it, the higher priced product may better VALUE.
